Why do I feel red, hot, itchy, steamy, or cold after moxibustion?
2023-06-02
Some moxibustion friends have skin itching after moxibustion, accompanied by rash, or even redness, swelling, and blisters…

What's going on? Is this a normal reaction after moxibustion?

Can I still continue moxibustion in this situation?

  Detox reaction after moxibustion.

In fact, skin rashes, unbearable itching, red rashes, etc. after moxibustion are normal detoxification reactions. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, it is caused by dampness, cold, wind, and heat toxins in different internal organs. At the same time, people with different physiques will have different reactions. Some people with better physiques will have smaller reactions, while those with deviated physiques will have larger reactions and more frequent reactions. It may also be the other way around, with a good detoxification response being significant, but a poor body having a less pronounced response.

So we don’t have to be afraid of these reactions after moxibustion, but we must clearly realize that it is the lack of energy in the body that allows evil to invade our body. When we use moxibustion to expel these evil, they will Will resist, and in the process of struggle will inevitably leave traces of fighting. But as long as we persist in moxibustion and the energy in the body gradually becomes stronger, the reaction will become smaller and smaller.

  Causes of itching after moxibustion

We mentioned above that the process of moxibustion is a process of fighting against evil spirits. Therefore, after the heat energy generated by moxibustion defeats the evil spirits, it will penetrate into our body, effectively replenishing and restoring the energy in the liver, spleen, and kidneys, thus improving the cell detoxification and self-healing capabilities.

It is precisely because we have the strength to fight against external evils that the external evils are driven out of the internal organs and other tissues and organs and then enter the skin. When they are being expelled, itching or eruptions will appear on the skin, pieces of rashes, blisters, etc.

At this time, some people will feel unbearable itching, some pain, and some dryness and flaking... The more it itches, it means the evil is heavier and deeper, and the more serious the damage to internal organs, blood, and organs will be. If the evil can penetrate to this point, it can also be judged that the evil has entered for a long time. At this time, moxibustion is needed for a period of time to detoxify the body. Don't be anxious.

If "itching" occurs, moxibustion is needed.

"Treatise on Exposed Sores, Pain, Itching and Numbness" says: "If there is fire near the hostage's skin, it is a sore. If it is close to the fire, it will be painful. If it is close to the fire, it will be itchy. If it is slightly distant, it will be itchy. The pain is true, and the itching is deficiency, not deficiency and cold. It means a little bit of heat."

In other words, the reason why we experience itching after moxibustion is because of "deficiency", but this deficiency does not refer to physical weakness, but to what we often call insufficient energy. If long-term moxibustion can be used to nourish energy and completely eliminate moisture from the body, there will be no "itching".

All in all, itching after moxibustion is a good sign, at least the body can receive the signal. Itchy skin after moxibustion means that moisture, coldness, evil spirits, etc. in the body begin to be eliminated from the body surface under the stimulation of moxibustion. Traditional Chinese medicine believes: "Any discomfort that occurs is first controlled internally and then occurs externally." This means that as long as the evil can be released, there will naturally be no major problems with the body.

For most people, this reaction will disappear on its own after a few days, so there is no need to take any measures and just continue to use moxibustion. If it is really itchy, then we can try moxibustion on Quchi, Xuehai, Geshu and other acupoints, which can help relieve the itching.

What do the various post-moxibustion reactions mean?

1red and white spots - need to continue moxibustion

If the skin flushes unevenly after moxibustion, the flush will be mixed with light white spots of different sizes, and some may even be more white than red! This is due to local blockage of meridians and poor circulation of qi and blood. It is suggested that moxibustion should be continued until the warm sensation at the moxibustion site is enhanced. After moxibustion, the white spots on the skin disappear and uniform flushing and sweating appear, represent the adequate dosage course of treatment.

2The skin is flushed in patches and moisture appears - the amount of moxibustion is enough

During the moxibustion process, the skin around the acupuncture points will appear flushed in patches, even with water vapor, and the hands will feel moist to the touch (this phenomenon usually occurs when moxibustion is performed with a moxibustion box or pot, and when moxibustion is performed in the sky, this reaction rarely occurs during moxibustion). This reaction is the efflux of moisture, indicating that the amount of moxibustion at one time is relatively sufficient and the current moxibustion can be stopped.

3Skin rash and itching appear - expel cold

If there is heavy moisture in the body, a small rash will appear on the face or body during the moxibustion treatment, and it will be itchy. This is a manifestation of dispelling cold and wind. In this case, moxibustion can be continued for observation. If the rash subsides on its own, stop. If it does not subside or worsens, moxibustion can be added on Quchi and Daling points.

4Sounds appear deep in acupuncture points - a sign of dredging of meridians

Sometimes during moxibustion, especially after a certain course of moxibustion, moxibustion practitioners will feel a sound deep in the acupuncture points. This is a sign that long-standing stagnant meridians are being dredged after a certain amount of moxibustion is reached

  5Blisters appear

This often occurs in moxibustion practitioners who have just started moxibustion or who are trying to increase the amount of moxibustion. There are two main reasons:

①Excessive moxibustion. This indicates that the moxibustion time is too long and the amount of moxibustion is excessive. In this case, the number of moxibustion applications should be reduced or the single moxibustion time should be shortened.

②Pathogenic reaction. The appearance of blisters may also be due to the serious evil of the disease. The occurrence of blisters is a process of restoring the body's righteousness and eliminating evil spirits, so the appearance of such blisters is conducive to the recovery of the disease. The ancients proposed that the standard for the effectiveness of moxibustion is the body's response, and this response is moxibustion sores. Therefore, the ancients used moxibustion sores as a major indicator to judge the amount of moxibustion and the therapeutic effect.

Regarding the treatment of blisters: If blisters appear locally, they can be allowed to be absorbed naturally as long as they are not broken. If the blister is large, you can use a sterilized filiform needle to puncture the blister from below to release the water.

Skin burning - divided into four conditions

①Not used to moxibustion for the first time.

  Of course, there are also some discomforts that are very painful during the initial moxibustion. After a while, the local skin adapts to the moxibustion sensation and becomes less painful;

  ②Moxibustion is too powerful.

When the skin of a local acupuncture point is burned during moxibustion, the reason may be that the moxibustion fire is relatively strong. At this time, the moxibustion fire can be reduced or the distance between the moxibustion material and the skin can be increased. Secondly, pain experienced by moxibustion patients during moxibustion may also be caused by inaccurate acupoint selection. At this time, the acupoints need to be accurately positioned.

③This point does not require multiple moxibustion.

In addition, if the patient feels burning or pain during moxibustion, it means that the moxibustion site does not require more moxibustion, and the acupoints should be re-selected.

④The discomfort itself is very painful.

Some symptoms of discomfort are very painful. The pain is obvious during the initial moxibustion. After a certain period of moxibustion, the pain is relieved. This is a sign that the disease is getting better.

For example, the symptoms of herpes zoster include burning of the skin during initial moxibustion. When the moxibustion is carried out for a while, the burning pain subsides. When the burning sensation is reduced or even painless, it indicates that the amount of moxibustion applied at one time is sufficient, and the current moxibustion can be stopped.

The phenomenon of relapse with moxibustion - the phenomenon of disease cure

After the first moxibustion or a certain number of moxibustion treatments, more than 50% of people will have aggravation of illness or other abnormal reactions such as sweating during moxibustion or sweating after moxibustion. This phenomenon may last for several days or longer, this is a typical pathogenic reaction.

There are also people who have runny noses and sneezing during or after moxibustion, which are manifestations of cold being discharged from the body.

After several times of moxibustion, or after a period of moxibustion, some people will show cold limbs. This is the reaction of cold air on the body surface after moxibustion. In some cases, the cold in the internal organs is expressed on the body surface. This reaction occurs in the winter and spring seasons more seriously. If you have this kind of reaction, it means that the body's yang deficiency is severe and moxibustion needs to be continued.

The more frequent symptoms of disease elimination, the more it proves that the disease pathogens are still in a state of struggle, and it also reflects that energy is accumulating little by little. It is normal to have a disease elimination reaction, and it is also normal not to have a disease elimination reaction. Do not deliberately pursue the disease elimination reaction.
